Predictive maintenance for custom tooling in the aerospace industry

Full lifecycle tool tracking solution for usage and cost optimisation

AWB Anlagen, Werkzeugbau GmbH & Co KG has been producing components and tools from the hardest and most heat-resistant materials, as well as special tools and custom workshop and tool containers, for more than 25 years. Since the founding of AWB Aviation GmbH in 2015, the company is also a certified supplier to the aerospace industry.

Together with AWB, the Technical University of Darmstadt and KOPP, UHP developed a Lifecycle Tool Tracking System to better track the lifecycle of tools used for managing small tools in a large factory.

Challenge

  • In large factories with numerous small products and tools in machines, it is difficult to keep track of the lifecycle of each product
  • Existing tools in factories can be repaired, but the time involved and the tracking of individual tools is hard to manage for each product
  • Need for software that allows more efficient control and evaluation of their products

Solution

  • Together with AWB, the Technical University of Darmstadt and KOPP Co., UHP developed a tool lifecycle tracking system to better monitor the lifecycle of small tools in large factories
  • The answer was the creation of a system that calculates the remaining service life of tools and helps with maintenance scheduling and tool replacement planning
  • Better overview of tools, improved aircraft manufacturing planning, distribution of tools to partners and strengthening of partner relationships
  • No defective tools are used, so no material is wasted on a broken machine

Implementation

The implemented solution consists of:

  • Creation of management software with information on the individual tools present in the factory
  • Creation of scan codes for each tool visible in the software
  • Introduction of the software to employees working with tools, assembling machines and responsible for machine functionality and usage

Results

The result is a better overview of tools, improved aircraft manufacturing planning, distribution of tools to partners and strengthening of relationships with existing partners.

With the ENTERPRISE software, the number of hard-to-detect machine repairs and material waste are significantly reduced.
